Barry's Views-
Education-
Barry taught as a school teacher for many years and experienced firsthand the struggles teachers face when they are not provided the necessary funding and support teacher's need. He strongly believes in supporting and improving public schools, because every child should have access to a free, quality education. In congress, Barry will work to repeal No Child Left Behind because he knows it is a policy that hurts schools and students.
National Defense-
Barry has been opposed to the War in Iraq since the beginning. He believes that it has been a waste of money and, more importantly, American lives. He will continue to support President Obama's troop withdrawal plans. In addition, Barry believes we have been at War far too long and, although it has more credibility, the War in Afghanistan must stop too. Instead, Barry believes we need to focus on security measures aimed on preventing future attacks and dismantling Al Qaeda.
Guantanamo and Torture-
Barry supports the immediate closure of the Guantanamo Bay prison. He knows that the events that have taken place there are in violation of multiple international treaties and the US Constitution. Barry does not support so called "Advanced Interrogation Techniques" because they are torture and do not work.
Healthcare Reform-
Barry supports the recently passed Health Reform bill because he knows that it will help Americans. In congress, Barry will work to make sure that the bill remains law and that the insurance companies are obeying the new rules and regulations.
The Economy-
Like most Hoosiers, Barry has been affected greatly by the recession. He supports the measures President Obama and the Democrats in Congress have taken, but believes that more must be done. Barry strongly believes that we must repeal trade agreements like NAFTA and CAFTA because they take good paying jobs away from Americans. This will be one of his top priorities in congress. In addition, Barry believes that infrastructure projects are the key to pulling the country out of the recession. He especially believes that investing in the Green Energy market is our key to recovery because it serves multiple purposes. This is part of why he recently started a small green energy company.
Spending-
As a small business owner and middle-class American, Barry knows what it is like to work with a tight budget. He supports a pay as you go policy, will work to reduce wasteful spending and will put "small business economics" to work in Washington.
Energy Independence-
Barry believes that we cannot drill or mine our way to energy independence. Instead, Barry believes that we must invest in clean energy technologies because it serves multiple purposes. It helps the environment, will help us to combat global warming, will create jobs that cannot be outsourced and will help us achieve energy Independence.
The Environment-
Barry believes that we must face the fact that Climate Change is happening. He supports measures to stop climate change, such as Cap and Trade, and is opposed to new drilling and mining. In addition, Barry believes that we must save our natural treasures for generations to come and does not support efforts to reduce federally protected natural habitats.
LGBT-
Barry Welsh supports giving homosexual couples equal marriage rights. However, he believes that no minister should be forced to perform Gay and Lesbian weddings; if they don't want to, they don’t have to. In addition he believes that LGBT hate crimes against should be legally classified as hate crimes.
A Women's Right to Choose-
Barry believes that all women must have the right to make decisions about their own bodies. That being said, Barry supports measures that would encourage women to look at adoption, if applicable, before choosing to terminate a pregnancy. However, Barry realizes that having access to safe, legal abortions is needed.
Ethics and Transparency-
As a United Methodist pastor, Barry will hold himself to the strongest ethical standards. Barry also believes that the government should be transparent and will support citizen involvement in their government.
Separation of Church and State-
Although a United Methodist pastor, Barry believes in separation of church and state and will fight measures aimed at reducing it.
